Emily
Turner Receives
Scholarship
from Democratic Club
Fallbrook
Democratic Club awarded High School Senior Emily Turner, with an
enlarged version of a check for $500 to use toward her college degree
in journalism. Chris Assad, Club Publicity and Scholarship Chairperson
introduced Emily at the meeting on June 3rd. Thirty five
members and guests were there for the occasion. Although there were 17
qualified applicants for the scholarship, Emily was the perfect
recipient with her A+ average and nearly a thousand hours of volunteer
services to the Womens’ Resource Center, New Haven Home for Boys,
Stand up for Kids, Angel Shop, Casa De Amparo & Special Olympics
to name a few. She has also received awards from the National Charity
League. In her essay she said “Each time I volunteer, I fall more in
love with the act of helping others. My goal is to make this world a
better place.” You do Emily. Congratulations!

General
David M. Brahms,
January Speaker, Apparently
Two Places at Once
January 7th, 2010, as the
Club listened to retired USMC General David M. Brahms
give a stirring talk (because yes, we can handle the truth*)
which started with him describing how he stood behind
President Obama (literally as well as figuratively) as he signed
the pledge to close down Guantanamo, footage of that very event
was being shown on the East Coast feed of The
Daily Show. (Screen capture pictured above.)
*Never explain a
joke, except when you have to: Gen Brahms was a technical
advisor on the film A Few Good Men.

Bill
Moyers Honors Chalmers Johnson, saying of Nemesis
"There's one book in particular I
would put in everybody's stocking if I could. It's not new -
it was actually published three years ago. But I read it again
this month, and found its message more relevant than ever."
(Watch
the video or read the transcript.)
JOHNSON addressed The Club in June 2007 as part of his Nemesis
Tour. A DVD of this talk, Evil
Empire, is now available from The Club. Order
online, or arrange
to buy at the meeting. (Pictured
